We visited the Catacombs of San Sebastiano along the Appian Way. He was a Roman guard who was tied to a tree and shot with arrows for converting to Christianity. It is said that the bodies of Peter and Paul were kept here for a while. It was an incredible experience to see where the early Christians buried their dead. We saw a number of etchings and frescoes depicting Christian symbols and Biblical scenes. There were even 3 pagan Roman burial tombs, as well, underground. What was fascinating to realize was that while still pagan, the Romans burned their dead, keeping their ashes in urns. Yet, in those same tombs were the burial plots of family members in following generations that had become Christian. Over the arches of these tombs, they had painted beautiful frescoes of the resurrection and the Last Supper. Our day on the Appian Way was, by far, the most moving experience we had on our trip.
