The Mamertine PrisonThis is the 2500 year old prison where Peter and Paul were said to be held. According to Scripture, however, Paul was kept under house arrest. There is an upside-down cross to commemorate Peter's crucifixion. This prision was tiny, dark, and musty. Two smelly Italian men also visiting the site helped give it a more "authentic" quality, too.
This is looking through one hole up to the hole of the next level from which prisoners were lowered down into the prison.

It is creepy to think of being lowered down into the belly of that musty, damp, and dark prison.
How hopeless and helpless one must have felt.

These pictures gives me a whole new perspective on imprisonment in the New Testament. My feeble mind just thinks of childrens' Sunday School lessons with cartoon pictures of stone cells and iron bars.

How amazing to see and experience those things!
