We visited the World War II American cemetery in St. Avold, France on June 6th.
It is about an hour from our home, but was the first visit we have made to an American cemetery here in Europe. I had no idea what was in store...
This is just a small glimpse of the rows and rows of perfectly white graves that you see once you reach the crest of the hill that overlooks the cemetery. It was stunning and very moving to see the graves of what is only a small number of the men who died fighting for our country. There were tears shed on this day-trip.

i've been doing some research on three planes that were shot down right at our village during world war II. one of the pilots is buried at st. avold, so now i would really like to go visit his grave. the american battle monuments commission tells you exactly where they are buried, down to the row and plot number.
